Indian Railways is sanguinely the transportation support system of the country with its commendable presence ever since the last 150 years. It boasts of running on of the world’s largest rail network covering a distance of more than 64,215 track kilometers. However, that covers only very less length of the railway network. Narrow Gauge is present at very few routes, especially in hilly terrains. It covers around 2,500 route-km with ‘Kalka-Shimla Railway’, ‘Nilgiri Mountain Railway’, and ‘Darjeeling Himalayan Railway’ as the most notable hill lines.
